    Ah, the frustration of the fitting room. If you’re like most women, you’ve probably experienced the confusion of finally finding something in your size, only to find that it doesn’t fit very well. Is the size wrong? Not exactly. It’s more like size doesn’t matter. Shopping for your shape is the key to finding clothes that fit your body well, and not just the store mannequin. Timbercreek Communities wants to help you look and feel your best this year. Here’s how to shop for your shape.

    Accentuate the Positive

    Every body has its positive assets. Shopping for your shape is all about learning what those are and making the most of them. No matter what your shape, there are clothes to flatter it. So, we suggest starting by finding out what shape you are:

    Pear

    If you are a pear shape, it’s most likely that when you gain weight, it shows mostly on your bottom and legs. Your waist is defined, and your shoulders and bust line are narrower than your hips. Look for A-line shapes to accentuate your waist and flow with your natural shape.

    Inverted Pear

    An inverted pear is defined by wider, athletic shoulders, a fuller bust line, straight waist and smaller hips. To find a balanced look you’ll want to keep it more simple up top. V-necklines will look great on you! Look for skirts, as well as dresses and pleated pants with belts that give the illusion of a waist.

    Apple

    You have long legs, a round bottom, little waist definition and a full bust line. Look for drapey shapes that lengthen your torso and gloss over the midsection. Showcase your legs with shorter skirts, dresses and leggings.

    Hourglass

    Your hips and shoulders are of equal width,and your waist is defined. You gain weight in your bottom and bust line. Skip the flowing fabrics and look for clothes that follow your natural curves, accentuating the waist.

    Rectangle

    You’ve got long legs and a shapely bottom. Your hips, waist and shoulders are approximately the same width. You’re going to look great in clothes that show off your bottom half and help define your waistline. Dresses and blouses are a good bet and the right belt can bring it all together.

    This season seems to be all about the return of natural pieces and details. Styles and colour schemes that evoke the forest and the sea are what’s trending. Reclaimed wood, especially stripped down, or natural light-coloured wood, is what to look for. This style is perfect for winter, as natural wood brings warmth to any space and goes with practically any colour. The Nordic or Scandinavian style of light wood furniture combined with lacquered white is a winning combination. If feels both comfortable and fresh, and is the perfect way to warm up a room this winter. Look for handmade pieces made with natural wood, with an artisanal feel.

    Edgy Jewel Tones

    A little splash of colour can go a long way. When choosing fabrics and accessories, look for jewel tones like ruby red and emerald green. These bold colours create contrast against white and natural wood elements for a whimsical and elegant look.

    Copper Accents

    The mixed metal accent pieces that were big last fall will continue into this year, particularly copper. Brass is being left behind. Copper brings vivid warmth and elegance to any room and its illuminating sheen is a welcome sight during a dark Canadian winter. Look for copper when choosing lamps, vases, decorative bowls and more.

    Rich Textures

    This year is all about the rich, luxurious feel of things. Rich velvet in bold colours will be seen everywhere from throw pillows to statement sofas. This trend toward the unapologetically bold, rich and sumptuous is called Maximalism. It's in stark contrast to Minimalism. This year, more is more.

    Industrial Pieces

    Industrial pieces, made mainly of iron and steel, can lend themselves to a minimalist or maximalist look. Minimalist industrial may feel a little cold for winter, but when you combine it with rich and luxurious textures and natural wood it can work very well.

    Moving can be a stressful experience for people and their pets. Timbercreek Communities wants to help you make the transition a smooth one for your furry family members. Here are some tips for how to help your pet feel at home in a new apartment.

    Same Old Routine

    Consistency is key when helping your pal cope with big change. Make sure you keep as many of their old routines intact as possible. This means everything from their feeding schedule, location of food dishes and litter box, walks, playtime and cuddling schedule. You may want to add in a few extra cuddle sessions, just to keep them from feeling anxious.

    Pack Their Bags, Too

    Moving is difficult enough, so it may be tempting to toss your best friend's stuff and buy them a brand new bed and new toys once you get to the new place. With so much change going on all around them, your pet may crave their comfy old stuff (and the aroma of the old place) more than the excitement of new things. Too much change can be confusing and stressful. Having some of their familiar stuff around can make them feel more comfortable in the new space.

    Plan For Your Pet

    Every pet has their own personality and will deal with the big change of moving differently. Some pets may love all the new things they have to explore. Others won’t feel like they’re on solid ground. They will look to you for support. This may mean they need to be around you more, or it could mean they would prefer the confined space of their crate, or even a leftover moving box. Make sure they have a safe spot, away from precarious packed and stacked boxes and suitcases. Particularly sensitive pets may be better off staying at a familiar friend’s place until you’ve unpacked and things have settled down a bit.

    Get Help

    If your pet is having trouble adjusting, it doesn’t mean they are badly behaved or that the situation won’t work. They may need more time to explore and settle in before they feel comfortable. If unwanted behaviour persists, give them more love, and seek assistance from a professional trainer or a veterinarian. Getting down on the floor with them to play can help get your familiar scent down on their level and spread it around the house quickly.

    Moving can be tricky for everyone. With a little planning, patience and a lot of love, you can help make their transition to a new home a smooth one.

  • The top five places to go snowshoeing

    Winter in Canada is what you make of it. There's no doubt about it, it’s cold. The secret to beating the cold is to keep moving. When the snow is too deep to walk in, it’s time to strap on a pair of snowshoes and trek on! Timbercreek Communities has rounded up the top five places to go snowshoeing in Canada.

    Alberta

    There's no shortage of snowshoe hotspots in Alberta. In Edmonton, you can head to Terwillegar Park, if you don’t have much time to travel. Just outside of the city, at Elk Island National Park, you can explore some world-class space and tons of fresh snow. The Amisk Wuche and Lakeview trails are not to be missed.

    In Calgary, in addition to city parks and golf courses, you can head to Bow Habitat Station in the southeast area of the city. Explore the Pearce Estate Park’s Interpretive Wetlands on site. Best of all, they offer snowshoe rentals, so it’s a great way to get into the sport, without spending a bundle.

    Saskatchewan

    Saskatchewan is home to some great snowshoeing. In Saskatoon, there are several spots along the banks of the Meewasin, and most golf courses provide a convenient and open space as well. If you’re willing to travel a little outside of the city, your options open up even more. Little Red River Park in Prince Albert offers some beautiful scenery, including aspen and jackpine woods, in its 1200 acres. There are designated snowshoe trails which are also dog-friendly.

    Manitoba

    There are lots of great trails to explore in Manitoba. There are over 850 public parks in Winnipeg alone! A short drive north of Winnipeg will lead you to Birds Hill Provincial Park. This is one of the few spots in the province that provides designated snowshoe trails -- no more competing with cross-country skiers!

    Québec

    The Québec City Area is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream come true! There are hundreds of kilometres of marked trails to enjoy and explore. Vallée Bras-du-Nord, alone, offers over 80 kilometres of marked trails, including some with cozy cabins and yurts to camp in.

    Eat Well Plate

    Build healthy meals with the Eat Well Plate. This handy trick will help you follow Canada’s food guide. The basic rule to follow for building healthy meals is to fill half of your plate with vegetables and fruit. Once you have a 50% balance of veggies and fruits, fill the other half with about 30% whole grains and 20% protein from meat or meat alternatives.

    Healthy Recipes for Each Meal

    Breakfast: Eat Your Greens Frittata

    Eggs and veggies are a great start to the day, but can be enjoyed any time! To make this recipe, wilt spinach in a skillet over medium heat, add diced peppers, minced garlic and hot pepper flakes (optional). Cook for three minutes. Whisk eggs with Parmesan cheese. Add this to the skillet and stir to combine. When it begins to set, place the skillet under the broiler for 2 or 3 minutes until golden. Breakfast is ready!

    Lunch: Colourful Quinoa Salad

    Quinoa is a delicious alternative to couscous that's packed with protein. It makes an excellent meatless meal suitable for vegetarians and vegans. To make this plant-based recipe, toast some quinoa in a medium hot skillet until it begins to pop. Add in vegetable broth, garlic and thyme. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer until the broth is absorbed. Heat chopped and seeded bell peppers, peeled and sliced carrot and zucchini, olive oil, lemon rind and pepper over medium-high heat. Stir as needed, until golden and tender crisp. Combine your cooked vegetables with your fluffed, cooked quinoa. Mix in basil, vinegar and lemon juice and enjoy!

    Dinner: Tomato Spinach Shrimp Pasta

    This easy and healthy pasta dish is perfect winter comfort food. Add peeled and deveined shrimp and olive oil to a skillet over medium-low heat. Add red pepper flakes, paprika, Italian seasoning and salt and pepper. When the shrimp is cooked through, remove from the heat and set aside. Add chopped tomato, fresh spinach, fresh basil and chopped garlic to the skillet. Heat until the spinach wilts. Remove from the heat and cover as you cook your favourite pasta according to the package directions. Add the cooked pasta and shrimp to the skillet, reheat on low and serve!

These tips that will help you stay happy, healthy and active all winter long.

    Staying Active in the Winter

    Find Something You Love to Do

    Finding a fun outdoor activity to enjoy will make you look forward to getting outside this winter. Start by thinking about the things you used to love doing in winter, but haven’t made the time for in recent years. It’s also a good idea to try something completely new-to-you like cross country skiing or snowshoeing. What you choose to do is up to you. Seta goal of trying something new every week until you find the right fit. Keep showing up. Keep getting out there.

    Take it Easy, but Don’t be Sedentary

    Exercise in winter doesn’t have to be vigorous to be effective. Try joining a walking group, or start your own with family and friends.

    Workout Inside

    If you can’t brave the outdoors for too long, try signing up for indoor fitness classes or clubs at a local community centre this winter. Walking to and from the class will add to your workout, too.

    Insulate with Layers

    The best defense against frigid temperatures is dressing efficiently in layers. Layering is the most effective way to stay warm, dry and comfy. If you get too hot, remove a layer. Your outer layer should be both wind and water resistant. It’s important to stay dry in cold weather. The layer closest to your skin should be made of a moisture wicking material. Avoid cotton as it stays wet when it gets wet.

    Hydrate

    Proper hydration is essential in all seasons. You may not feel as thirsty, but make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after any outdoor exercise. It never hurts to carry a thermos of herbal tea to help keep you warm and hydrated.

    Embrace the Light

    The short days and long nights of winter can make it harder to get enough sunlight. If you can, plan your outdoor activities during daylight hours. If you’re exercising outdoors at night, be sure to wear bright, reflective clothing.

    Use Your Amenities

    If your Timbercreek Community has a fitness centre or pool, make the time to use it. If you would rather workout in your suite, you can create a space to do some bodyweight workouts that require no equipment.

  • How to keep your dog away from your Christmas presents

    The Holidays are an exciting time for the whole family, including your pets. Timbercreek Communities wants to help make sure every member of the family has a happy holiday. Here are some tips for how to keep your dog away from your Christmas presents, and your tree.

    Go Bare and Artificial

    Pine needles may not be toxic to you pet, but they are sharp and can cause discomfort if ingested. An artificial tree may be less interesting to your pet. When you first set up your tree, leave it bare for a few days. This will give you pet time to investigate this curious addition to home and quickly lose interest in it, even when it becomes adorned with lights and bobbles.

    No Low Lights

    Once your dog has lost interest in your bare, artificial tree, it’s time to decorate it. To help your furry friend avoid temptation, and possible electric shock, make sure not to string any lights on the lower branches. Keeping things out of sight will help keep them out of mind for your pet. Hide any electrical cords running to or from the tree under a tree skirt, or use adhesive-backed cord clips to keep them out of reach of curious snouts.

    Christmas Tree Security

    To make sure your tree is secure, invest in a sturdy tree stand. For a second layer of tree security, you may want to rig up a homemade low-tech Xmas tree security system. Simply place aluminum cans filled with some dry beans, or noisy metal bolts, on the bottom limbs of the tree. If your pooch starts nosing around the bottom of the tree, they’ll sound the rattle-y alarm. Remember to keep fragile ornaments up in the higher branches.

    Take a Pass on Edible Ornaments

    Strings of popcorn, candy canes or anything else that can be seen as an enticing and tasty treat should be left off of your tree. Also, don’t store gifts of chocolate, even when it is wrapped, under your tree. If a brightly coloured tree that grew treats on and under its branches suddenly appeared in your living room, you’d probably want to investigate too!

    Pretty Plants can be Poison

    Mistletoe, Holly and Poinsettias are all potentially poison to your pets. If you decorate with these plants, make sure to keep them well out of reach of your four-legged friend. Nobody likes to be sick during the Holidays.

  • Cozy winter meals to warm up with

    The best winter meals are all about comfort and fabulous flavour. Timbercreek Communities has some delicious and cozy winter meals to share with you. Warm up with them this season.

    Beef stew with vegetables

    Butternut Squash Lasagna

    Traditional lasagna is great, but when winter rolls around this beautiful and creamy Butternut Squash Lasagna may make you feel even more cozy and comforted. To make it, preheat the oven 425°F. Divide a peeled and cubed butternut squash into 2 baking pans and toss the cubes with olive oil. Bake the squash until tender (about 20 minutes). Cook lasagna noodles according to the package directions. Meanwhile, make the herby bechamel sauce. Start by bringing milk and rosemary to a boil, then turn down the heat and simmer the mixture for 10 minutes before straining. Saute garlic in butter, stir in some flour and season with salt and pepper. Add in the rosemary milk. Boil and stir until it thickens. Reserve one cup of the herbed bechamel and add the squash to the remaining sauce. Layer the reserved sauce with cooked noodles, the squash mixture, and grated fontina and Parmesan cheese. Beat some heavy cream until peaks form and spread it on top. Bake at 375°F for 30 minutes. Your apartment will smell incredible.

    Chicken Enchiladas

    If the winter chill is getting you down, bake up a batch of these Chicken Enchiladas. To make them, brown boneless, skinless chicken breast in a little oil. Season with cumin, garlic and chili powder. Remove the chicken from the pan and saute onion and garlic in the drippings. Add corn, chiles and canned tomatoes. Shred the chicken and return it to the pan. Dust the whole mixture with flour to set it. Fill corn tortillas with canned enchilada sauce and the chicken mixture. Arrange evenly in a baking dish, then top them with cheese and more sauce and bake at 350°F for about 15 minutes, until the cheese melts.

    Beef Stew

    A pot of piping hot Beef Stew simmering on the stove on a cold winter day is the definition of cozy. It’s super hearty and surprisingly easy to make. To prepare it, coat cubes of boneless beef with flour, salt and pepper. Brown the beef in butter or oil over medium heat, then remove it from the pot. Add more butter, plus celery and onion. Add in tomato paste, dry red wine and return the beef to the pot. Add potatoes, carrots, parsley, thyme, bay leaves, beef broth and Worcestershire. Cover and braise in your oven for 45 minutes at 350°F. Add in cocktail onions and braise for another 15 minutes. Cook the stew, uncovered, for 30 to 40 minutes. Remove te parsley, thyme and bay leaves before serving.

    Spaghetti and Beet Balls

    Spaghetti and Beet Balls is a vegan-friendly way to enjoy a cozy and hearty meal this winter. Make the beet balls by blending walnuts into a flour. Saute some onions in oil over medium heat, add minced garlic, carrots and a little water. Add in nutritional yeast, oregano, paprika, chili powder, ground fennel, chipotle and a pinch of salt. Blend some peeled and grated beets in your food processor with cooked rice, Dijon mustard and tahini until you form a paste. Add in the carrot mixture and 1 tbsp of ground flax mixed with 3 tbsp warm water. Finally, add the walnuts and combine. Form balls with the mixture and arrange on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350°F for approximately 25 minutes as you prepare the pasta according to the package directions. Serve the cooked beet balls on top of your pasta with store-bought pasta sauce.
