• Business Casual Men's Attire & Dress Code Explained

    Jun 05, 2017

The term business casual is hard to define. From dress shirts and chinos to t-shirts and jeans, there are many interpretations of the term. For employees of companies that still require that men wear weekday suits to the office, business casual may mean no-jacket Fridays. Many businesses today have flexible dress codes, while some have no dress codes at all. If you’re unsure of what your version of casual men’s attire looks like, Timbercreek has some questions and considerations that will help you out.

Many feel it's a faux pas to assume any outfit with a blazer qualifies as business casual.  As Restart Your Style points out, business casual is still a dress code for business.  As such, dressing up a casual outfit isn't the goal: making semi-formal business attire more casual and comfortable is. Check out more here.

    Jeans Don't Count

John Mayer popularized the blazer-over-hoodie-with-jeans look in the mid-2000s. While the ‘put a blazer on it’ mentality certainly upsells some looks, for many, it just doesn’t cut it as business casual. While jeans are great, and many office environments today promote them, if you're going to wear them to work it’s best to stick to a high quality pair. Opt for new, dark, unripped jeans, and leave the hoodie at home -- unless you skateboard for a living.

    Programmer Chic

In the tech industry, home and "remote" work are on the rise. If you work remotely, and rarely meet with clients and colleagues, there’s no need for a closet full of office attire. For the rare times you do have to venture out, it’s good to have some clothing to wear that matches the style of your colleagues or clients, whether that be dress pants or jeans depends on them.

    Google Grade

While Google isn't the only company doing it (Twitter, Facebook, and Apple for example), they set the bar for the ping-pong office. With foosball, video games, yoga, DJing, and scheduled play among many strategies to improve performance and promote employee culture, dress codes have followed suit. In fact, one of Google’s philosophies is that 'you can be serious without a suit.' Learn more here.

    No Single Answer

One traditional definition suggests "business casual for men means wearing a pair of smart pants [i.e. slacks, chinos, or dress pants], a collared shirt, a sweater or blazer, and relaxed but elegant shoes." “Another author wrote in the Financial Times that ‘ordinarily business casual for guys seems fairly clear. It is a pair of chinos, a blazer and a good shirt, no tie.’" But the reality is, every industry is different. The traditional approach may apply to careers in finance and government, but in software development, advertising, design, and any kind of freelance work, the rules have changed. One key point to remember however: when interviewing, meeting a client, attending a performance review, or otherwise making an impression, it never hurts to dress up. Read more here and here.

  • 4 Ways to Ease Yourself Back into Budget Mode

    Feb 06, 2017

Did the holidays break the bank this year? There’s no need to panic! Now that life is getting back to normal, Timbercreek Communities has you covered with 5 ways to ease back into frugal living after the Holidays.

    iStock-483783492Plan and Prepare Your Meals

Waiting until you are hungry is not the healthiest or most cost effective way to eat. You will likely grab fast food you’re craving instead of preparing a healthy well-balanced meal. Preparing meals at home is healthier and less expensive than eating out often, especially when you plan ahead. This can mean anything from making a grocery or meal list and sticking to it, to cooking a week’s worth of meals and keeping them in the fridge or freezer. Here are some helpful tips to get started with meal planning.

    Use the 30 Day Rule

A very effective way to curb impulse purchases is to apply the 30 Day Rule. It’s very simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Whenever you feel the impulse to splurge on anything from new shoes to a new car, don’t. At least, not yet. Write down the item you think you want and the date on your phone, piece of paper etc. After 30 days, if you still want that item and can pay cash for it, consider purchasing it.

Have Friends Over for a Potluck Rather Than Going Out for Dinner

Spending time with friends and breaking bread (or whatever you like to eat) is one of life’s greatest simple pleasures. Unfortunately, it can also be very expensive. You don’t have to become a hermit to save money. You can continue to enjoy the company of good friends and good food by hosting a potluck dinner party at your Timbercreek home.

    Drink More Water

It may seem strange that something as simple as drinking more water could help you save money -- until you think about it for a minute or two. Drinking more water means you won’t need to purchase other liquids like coffee, soda or tea. Take a refillable water bottle with you when you leave your apartment to avoid buying drinks during the day. Drinking water before a meal can also help you stay fuller longer, which means you will spend less money on food.

We hope that these suggestions will help you ease back into frugal living fast.

  • How to Find a Job On Or Near Campus

    Sep 13, 2016

To have spending money, or staying out of debt, and start saving for tomorrow is a smart plan when your attending college or university. Many businesses are looking for part-time workers all year round. Check out today’s post for four tips on how to find work on or near campus and start making money today.

    Take advantage of on-campus services

If you have yet to visit your university’s career services centre, this might be the best place to start. Most institutions have entire departments devoted to helping you identify your skill set, clean up your resume and prepare for interviews. Residents at London apartments (1267 Richmond Street), have it especially easy. In one click you can sign up today for an appointment with a Career Counsellor at the on-campus Student Success Centre at Western University (1151 Richmond Street), located just a 15-minute walk away from your apartment.

    Attend a job fair

Job fairs offer an awesome opportunity to meet with multiple employers at once. Each year in September, for example, the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Guelph and Conestoga College all work together to sponsor the nation’s largest Career Fair. This year’s fair is set for Wednesday, September 28th, in Waterloo’s RIM Park.

    Search your university’s job bank

Tired of hearing that you’re too young or don’t have enough experience? No online employment database will cater to your demographic more than your university’s job bank. Employers who post there are specifically open to hiring students. By using this database you have better odds of finding a job that is flexible and appropriate for your experience level and skill set. Students at Wilfred Laurier University (75 University Avenue West), located near Waterloo Apartments, have access to over 5,000 jobs posted each year online via the Career Development Centre’s Navigator.

    Network, network, network

Finding a great job is often the result of being connected to the right person at the right time. Staying engaged in on-campus activities is fun and might help you connect with a person who has the contacts you need to get hired today. Your university may also host networking events. The University of Waterloo hosts Employer Information Sessions which make mingling with potential employers easy.

Timbercreek Communities wishes you good luck in your search for a job. For more information about apartments located near your university, visit our website today.
