School's out! Kid-friendly summer activities

Jul 23, 2025

Summer is in full swing; the kids are out of school and are already getting antsy. Parents in Calgary don’t need to wrack their brains for something to keep the kids busy during the days. Timbercreek Communities has compiled a list of some crowd-pleasing options to make the most of the summer vacation.

  •  Sign the kids up for one of the many summer camp programs in Calgary. There are a number of offerings from the City of Calgary, including free drop-in programs for outdoor playgrounds. This is available for the youngsters aged 3-5 and there are also programs for those aged 6-12.
  •  If your child is an animal lover, the Calgary Zoo holds a popular day camp program throughout the summer months. Programs run for Zoo Tots (ages 4-6) all the way to teen campers for those in grades 7-12. Call ahead to confirm availability: (403) 232 - 9300. There’s also the Calgary Humane Society’s Camp Fur, Fins & Feathers. Daily activities include: games, crafts and animal interactions.
  • The University of Calgary runs a variety of camp programs on everything from engineering, arts and performance, sports and science.
  • On scorching sunny days, visit one of the City of Calgary’s Wading and Spray Pools with locations throughout the city.
  • For a fun afternoon with the family, visit the Bow Habitat Station’s Trout Pound. This stocked pond is perfect for first time fishers to try out some catch-and-release fun. Rods are available for rent from the Discovery Centre for $5.
  • On Sundays, Head to the East Village neighbourhood for Voices in the Village. Musical programming includes: country bands, jazz singers, Chinese drummers and dancers to provide something for everyone. Performances are held behind the RiverWalk Plaza and are free of charge.
  • There are tons of great summer events happening throughout Calgary, here are just a few of the picks that both parents and kids are guaranteed to enjoy: Chinatown’s Calgary Dragon Boat Festival  (Aug 10-11), Taste of Calgary (Aug 15-18), and Calgary Globalfest (Aug 16-25).
