Stress Free Camping Trip - What To Pack

Aug 14, 2018

Ah, summer! Time to throw the tent in the car, pack up a cooler, and hit the trail. Summer is the perfect time for camping, and with the season in full swing, it’s time to make your list. But from bedrolls to mosquito spray, what to take often spins out of control, or gets missed completely. To help you pack for a stress free camping trip, Timbercreek brings you this list of essentials to help make your summer trip easy breezy.

Camping Packing

Water

Most important for any wilderness trip of any kind is your water source. Get a good ceramic filter, or purification tablets, and pre-fill a quality plastic or metal water bottle for each member of the trip. Learn more.

Tent

A good tent can make the difference between a sad and soggy trip, or a fabulous, dry, idyllic experience. Tent rentals are available, but whether you buy, rent, or borrow, don’t skimp on this essential. Check out more.

Sleeping Bags and Pads

A close second to tents in importance is sleeping bags. Pick something that works for 3 seasons -- that’ll allow for autumn type night temperatures that can readily occur in the bush, even in summer. Similarly, a sleeping pad can mean the difference between having a root in your back all night, and a sweet, dreamy night’s sleep. Read more.

Knife, utensils, dishware

From food to rope, to digging to firewood, a good knife makes a big difference on a camping trip. Also make sure you have a cooking stove and fuel, a plastic “spork” (spoon + fork) and a plate for eating, as well as a mug for coffee, tea, and water. Learn more.

Camp Food

Camp food has to be thought of in terms of weight, cooking time, and difficulty of cooking. Another major factor to consider is each item’s ability to last without refrigeration. Cheeses, pita bread, oats/grains, refried beans and canned goods, crackers and nuts are all good options. Learn more.

Weather-appropriate Clothing

For men and women alike, clothes for camping share similar requirements. Pack and think in layers. Don’t bring too much cotton as cotton soaks up sweat, gets wet, and takes a long time to dry. Aim for one pair of multipurpose pants, a few poly blend t-shirts, a long sleeve, a light sweater, a water-resistant jacket, a bathing suit, 2-3 undies, at least one pair of good socks, sturdy shoes, and potentially a toque. Hygiene and Medical Essentials

Take travel size hygiene essentials, and don’t go anywhere without a first aid kit. They’re not super expensive and can be very helpful. Always be aware of bears and other animals if camping in their habitat. Learn more.
