Living in Downtown Toronto

Jan 23, 2018

Recently voted one of the best cities in Canada to live in, Hogtown residents have long known that Toronto is a great city. A hub for business, tech, immigration, and culture, Toronto has high levels of safety, diversity, and quality of life. And there’s no cooler or more cultured part of town than downtown, particularly Yonge and Dundas. One of Toronto’s premiere neighbourhoods, Timbercreek brings you this list of the best spots to check out in the area.

Yonge Dundas Square

A rare open space in the downtown core, Yonge Dundas Square has grown into a cultural hub. With free shows and innovative musical programming, YDS is a gem in the heart of the city. It’s also just a short walk from The Maitlands at Yonge and Wellesley.

Eaton Center

The Eaton Center is a Toronto landmark. With eye-catching architecture, multiple floors, a blinding array of stores and restaurants, and a herd of patrons, the Eaton Center is a social and shopping experience.

Cineplex Cinemas Yonge-Dundas Theatre

At the top of 3 floors of escalators, Cineplex’s Yonge Dundas Cinema location is massive, with 23 screens including IMAX, 3D, and 5 VIP rooms. Great for a night out, it’s got something for everyone.

Massey Hall

Massey Hall is a legendary venue for Canadian and international musicians. With a stunning and historic interior, cozy bar, and fantastic acoustics, it’s worth seeing just about anything at Massey Hall. Sherwood Apartments are within walking distance, and are even closer to The Phoenix Concert Theatre, another of Toronto’s premiere live music venues.

Ed Mirvish Theatre

Formerly Toronto's historic Royal Alexandra Theatre, the Ed Mirvish Theatre has a long history in the arts, producing original plays and musicals featuring Canadian and International acting and musical talent. A neighbourhood icon within easy reach of The Maitlands.

3 Brewers

An early and pioneering entry into the Canadian craft beer scene, 3 Brewers offers a delicious assortment of locally made beer. Known for their copper brewing gear visible to patrons, the 3 Brewers is a neighbourhood staple. See more.

Salad King

A groundbreaker in the Toronto Thai food community, Salad King is one of the city’s oldest and most outstanding Thai restaurants. From early days as a mock university cafeteria to its stunningly reno-ed 2nd floor current space, Salad King should be on your must-eat list.

Old City Hall & Nathan Phillips

Nathan Phillips Square is one of Toronto’s defining public spaces. With a Henry Moore sculpture, the famous pond (doubling as a skating rink in winter), massive outdoor space, old city hall architecture, and the famed PanAM games “Toronto” sign, it’s an iconic Toronto landmark.

Sunset Grill

At Queen and Yonge you'll find an amazing breakfast spot. Sunset Grill has it all: variety, bottomless coffee, and huge portions of breakfast fare -- the most important meal of the day. Close to Garden View Apartments, Sunset Grill and numerous other brunch hotspots are just a short walk or transit ride away.

Transit Access

Yonge and Dundas is a Toronto transit hub. From the College, Dundas, and Queen streetcars, to the Yonge subway line, it’s easy to get everywhere and anywhere in Toronto. Whether it’s from The Maitlands, Sherwood Apartments, or Garden View, all of Toronto is at your fingertips with the TTC.
