• Saving on Utilities During The Hottest Days Of Summer

    Jul 23, 2018

    Utilities Savings

With the increasing extremity of weather and temperatures due to climate change, we’re being forced to rely more heavily on energy. This comes at a great cost for us as individuals, and the planet at large. By reducing our reliance on utilities, we can all do our part to work towards a more sustainable future. To help you cut back comfortably, Timbercreek brings you this list of eco-friendly tips to help you save on utilities this summer.

    No-Cook Meals

In summer, the heat from cooking can mean both an unwanted bump in room temperatures, and the subsequent need for AC. Try making meals that require little to no cooking. Think salads, raw vegan meals, wraps, precooked chicken and charcuterie meats, nut and seed snacks, etc. Check out more.

    Reduce AC Use

Air conditioning is one of the biggest drains on the power grid in summer. It's hard on both the environment and the wallet. With a bit of discipline, you can hold off on using AC and reduce your impact. Try to use fans -- while still requiring energy, they use much less than a standard AC unit. Open windows and doors for maximum natural airflow. Close window shades to reflect solar heat. And if you do use AC (if it’s central air), close the vents in rooms that aren’t in use. Read more.

    Air-dry laundry

Hanging your laundry to dry is a great way to save power and money. String an outdoor laundry line on your balcony, make use of all your apartment’s doors and hanging areas, or pick up a drying rack that can accommodate many layers of items. Learn more.

    Less Lighting

With the sun setting as late as 9 o’clock, there’s plenty of natural light to take advantage of in the summer. Try using less interior lighting, open curtains, and make the most of your space’s natural lighting. See more.

    Unplug Devices

Many devices will still draw power when plugged in -- even if they’re not turned on. When not in use, unplug TVs, phone and device chargers, fans, toasters, hair dryers, etc. Learn more.

    Water Conservation

The high heat of summer puts pressure on our community's water supplies. Needs spike in the hottest season of the year, so it’s wise to conserve as much as possible. Don’t run the tap when washing dishes, run the dishwasher only when full, wash clothes in cold water and only full loads, and take shorter showers. Learn more.

Timbercreek hopes these eco-friendly tips help you reduce your utility costs and live more sustainably this summer. For more information about Timbercreek Communities in your city, please visit our website.
